Viewing data fields and tags

EscapeE may be used to extract data from PCL datasteams and documents; see About extracting data.

The fields and tags are depicted as rectangular boxes with "sizing handles" at the corners:

The default colours for the sizing handles may be entered manually into the configuration file (RT.INI) or on the command line, see Command line syntax.

To view the position of data fields and tags on the pages

Select Show from the 'Fields' menu. You may choose to view all the fields and tags, or only the fields and tags if found on the page, from the sub-menu. Field names and tag names are displayed when the show names option is ticked. Choose none to switch off field and tag viewing.

In addition, when the 'Fields Definition' dialogue is open (ctrl + d), the 'all' and 'if found' set-ups are repeated as checkbox options: see Editing data fields and tags.

To view field and tag definitions

1.Select Edit... from the 'Fields' menu. Field names are listed on the right of the 'Field' window.
2.To view the field names as a hierarchy of fields and their related tags, check the Tree box. The tree can be expanded and collapsed by clicking on the folder icons. Fields can be moved and reordered (for example, for CSV export) by dragging them to a new position in the tree.
3.To view a sorted list of names, uncheck Tree. This makes named fields easier to find and rename.
4.Click on the field or tag name in the list to display the its definition. While a field or tag definition is being displayed it is also depicted on the page as a red outline.

Tip

Click the 'back' and 'forward' buttons at the foot of the dialogue to show the previous page and next page of the document.
